Tribulus Terrestris is an herbal derivative that contains steroidal saponins that have the ability to increase luteinizing hormone and testosterone.1 Protodioscin is a phytochemical agent derived from Tribulus terrestris L plant, which has been clinically shown to improve sexual desire and enhance erection via the conversion of protodioscine to DHEA (De-Hydro-Epi-Androsterone). Preliminary observations suggest that Tribulus terrestris L grown on different soils does not consistently produce the active component Protodioscin.2 Tribolan contains a special extract produced in Germany that has been standardized to contain Protodioscin. In other research Protodioscin has been shown to exhibit proerectile activity. The enhanced relaxant effect observed is probably due to increases in the release of nitric oxide from the endothelium and nitrergic nerve endings, which may account for its claims as an aphrodisiac.3

Avena Sativa is the Latin name for oat straw. This wild oat derivative has been shown to increase luteinizing hormone and testosterone.4 Whenever the body produces endogenous testostosterone or testosterone from prohormone conversion a portion of that testosterone is unbound and bound. It also thought to have the unique ability to increase unbound or free testosterone. Unbound testosterone is the portion of testosterone that exerts the anabolic and androgenic effects. Bound testosterone is comprised of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin, which constitutes the majority of circulating testosterone. By increasing LH and total testosterone coupled with increasing the portion of free or active testosterone should result in dramatic effects.

Maca root (Lepidium meyenii Walpers) is traditionally employed in the Andean region for its properties to improve energy and fertility.5 This herb hasbeen shown to improve sexual behavior in various animal studies. Oral Maca root was administered to three groups consisting of a low dose, high dose, and placebo group for 15 days. Sexual performance parameters where then measured which demonstrated that both low and high dose maca root administration improved sexual performance. Another study with Lepidium meyenii resulted in an increase in the weights of testis and epididymis but not the seminal vesicle weight. It was shown that Lepidium meyenii root invigorates spermatogenesis in male rats.6 While not definitive the mechanism for these effects are thought to be related to an increase in testosterone production.

Muirapauma Root (Ptychopetalum olacoides) is regarded as one of the best herbs to use for erectile dysfunction. At the Institute of Sexology in Paris, France, under the supervision of one of the world's foremost authorities on sexual function, Dr. Jacques Waynberg, a clinical study with 262 patients complaining of lack of sexual desire and the inability to attain or maintain an erection demonstrated Muirapauma extract to be effective in many cases. Within 2 weeks, at a daily dose of 1 to 1.5 grams of the extract, 62 percent of patients with loss of libido claimed that the treatment had dynamic effect while 51 percent of patients with "erection failures" felt that Muirapauma was of benefit.7

In a study was to further investigate the effects of these four herb medicines on the levels of plasma corticosterone (B), testosterone (T) and triiodothyronine (T3) in rats by administering herbs together (mixed group) or individually. It was shown that all four Yang-restoring herbs tended to raise plasma B level and it was significant in HC, EB and mixed groups, especially in HC administered rats (P less than 0.001). However, this did reflect the average effect of these four herbs, which showed a restraining and harmonious relationship in a Chinese medical prescription. 8.
